about

The second full-length from Coltrane Motion takes the Chicago duo's dance-and-drone formula to the next level, smothering sunburnt melodies in a haze of distorted guitar and swirling organ. Fuzzed-out drum loops and analog synths tear through the thick shoegazer fog, leaving behind a raucous mess of pulsing, noisy psych-pop.

about

Coltrane Motion Chicago

hey, let's make a dance record that sounds like what we dance to: girl groups and big beat and fuzzed-out indiepop / let's make a shoegaze laptop record out of drum breaks, guitar drone and broken synthesizers / yeh, let's call it rock n roll

Track Name: When We Were Old
when we were old
we didn't care
we took all our pills and money
threw them in the air

we were dumb
we were scared
drank until we felt less
til the city loved us again

call, call, call, call it what you want to
i know, i know we could do this right

when we were old
we were true
took our clothes off with the lights on
like it was something new

i was wrong
you were beautiful
all the things we left unfinished
never really mattered at all
Track Name: Maya Blue
give me a look, give me something to sing about
i'm tired of going out by myself
our bodies are young / our bodies are understood
let's start a fire, i could use a change

maya blue
red and marigold

here with you
this could be something

there's a hand in my mouth, there's a blush to your cheeks
your hair's a mess so guess we're friends
salt on my tongue / sugary sweet
we want what we want and we want it right now
Track Name: I Forgot There Was A War On
oh
i never had a fight in my life
oh
the kids i knew never had a choice
here
in the middle of the floor with your headphones on
here
all the girls, all the girls are watching cnn on the bar tv

for a second i forgot there was a war on
for a second i forgot there was a war on

oh
we sleep in the daytime, go out at night
oh
burnt all our notebooks cause they told too much
here
you've changed your hairstyle so many times
here
lived in a brownstone, moved to the ghetto for the cheap rent

for a second i forgot there was a war on
for a second i forgot there was a war on
oh the way you move i forgot there was a war on
for a second i forgot there was a war on

i like the look of your face, i like your uniform
i like the sound of your voice, i'd like to see you alive again
i like the look of your face, i like your uniform
i like the sound of your voice, i'd like to see you alive again
Track Name: Wherever This Is
cornfields sing
we were born here
so if there's nothing left then we're to blame

no one leaves
and no one gets out
the bodies change but the faces stay the same

and it feels like a little bit of downward motion
that pulls my feet away from here
all the people we loved were just
friendly ghosts
i'm only happy when i'm far
i'm only happy when i'm far away from here

friday night
we saw the bright lights
and the girls doing shots in the parking lot are our friends

everyone
you know is still here
if there's no morning the party never ends

and it feels like a little bit of downward motion
that pulls my feet away from here
all the people we loved were just
friendly ghosts
i'm only happy when i'm far
i'm only happy when i'm far away

heaven waits
for those who need it
the rest of us got bored and moved away

look ahead
you'll see the same thing
while the past grows smaller every day

and it feels like a little bit of downward motion
that pulls my feet away from here
all the people we loved were just
friendly ghosts
i'm only happy when i'm far
i'm only happy when i'm far away
i'm only happy when i'm far
i'm only happy when i'm far away
i'm only happy when i'm far
i'm only happy when i'm far away from here
i'm only happy when i'm far
i'm only happy when i'm far
i'm only happy when i'm far away
Track Name: Only Again
i was wounded in your war
got a broken purple heart on my sleeve
i left here for the coast
came back to feel the ground where my blood lay

only friends, i know, i know and
only this time oh it's so much better when it's
only just this once more, and then
only again oh it's so much better when we're

oh

i stumbled on the way
got lost between your bedroom and mine
and now you're here
to push away the sun
to push away the focus, focus

only friends, i know, i know and
only this time oh it's so much better when it's
only just this once more, and then
only again oh it's so much better when we're
only friends, i know, i know and
only this time oh it's so much better when it's
only just this once more, and then
only again oh it's so much better when we're

oh

only again
Track Name: Terra
take the beach trail
from the highway
til the ocean
meets the sand

here is my heart
laid before you
here is my heart
in your hands

Terra
Track Name: High Tide
if you want
we could leave tonight
pull up our stakes and take the clothes on our backs
drop all our records at the nearest army post

quit our jobs
sell the car
we'll dance better with our pockets empty
and our boots worn thin

high tide / leave the house, leave the phone
empty / leave everything that we own
we need / to learn to be alone

high tide / there's nothing left but the door
empty / sick and stuck to the floor
we need / something else, something more

oh oh oh

i know
you said goodbye to the streetlights
you said goodbye to the north side
you said goodbye to the shore

i know
you said goodbye to our old friends
you said goodbye to our new ones
you said goodbye to the shore

well we met some kids and we played the part
and we met some girls and they broke our hearts
and the same beat going on and on and on and on

well we met some kids and we made some art
and we met some boys and we broke their hearts
and the same beat going on and on and on and on

high tide / leave the house, leave the phone
empty / leave everything that we own
we need / to learn to be alone

high tide / there's nothing left but the door
empty / sick and stuck to the floor
we need / something else, something more

oh oh oh
Track Name: My Heart Might Go On
i woke up
in the city
i woke up
without a plan

met a girl
met a true one
fell in love
and fell apart

now we're stuck
in a new cage
now we're bored
of being us

broken down
but just empty
comfortable
like a song i wrote

i'm tired of being young

let's get out
of this country
lets get out
of this bar

here's a map
here's a new life
we can go
we can go tonight

i'm tired of being young

this party's over, i know
Track Name: Please Call It A Comeback
if i die
before the next new year
let no one say i didn't try
too little, too late, with my heart in the right place
found the right place next to you

draw a line from the house where we met to the next big thing
do our paths intersect (nothing!)
i was only joking but there's nothing left
but psychiatry and love songs
and all the girls, all the birds, singing you're so and we're so sweet i know
and we're so sweet i know, i know, i know, i know, i know

and if we live forever
in some computer in the cloud
everything we worked for, everything we made
will mean nothing
maybe it did anyway
Track Name: One Year From Now
well you called me yesterday when i was sleeping
so i listened to your message in my room
if i told you everything you might believe it
but all i could say was 'be home soon'
